Why I dumped PDP, withdrew from Presidential race – Peter Obi

It is no more news that, former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party. He also announced his withdrawal from the race for the party’s presidential ticket.

Director General of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Organisation, Dr. Doyin Okupe, made this public after submitting a copy of Obi’s resignation letter to the PDP National Secretariat, Abuja, on Wednesday.

Okupe noted that his aspirant took the decision following recent happenings within the party.Obi had in the latter titled: “Resignation From Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Withdrawal from the Presidential Contest,” which he addressed to the PDP National Chairman, Sen. Iyiochia Ayu, dated May 24, 2022, said he had already notified the party Chairman at the ward level.

He wrote, “I am writing to intimate you of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which was conveyed to the Chairman of Agulu Ward 2. Anaocha LGA

“Anambra, effective Friday 20 May, 2022. Consequently, am by this letter informing you of my withdrawal for the PDP Presidential Primaries.

“It has been a great honour to contribute to nation-building efforts through our party. Unfortunately, recent developments within our party make it practically impossible to continue participating and making such constructive contributions.

“Our national challenges are deep-seated and require that we each make profound sacrifices towards rescuing our country. My commitment to rescuing Nigeria remains firm, even if the route differs.

“I wish to thank you personally for your graciousness and leadership. I wish you well and best of luck in the service of country.“

Although he gave no reason for his action, it was gathered that the decision of the national body to address the concerns of his supporters in Anambra State before the party’s delegate election was largely responsible.

N2.9bn Fraud! After hours of siege, EFCC arrests Rochas Okorocha

After several hours of siege and drama, yesterday,at his Maitama,Abuja residence, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha. They broke into his residence and whisked him away. The operatives gained entrance into Okorocha’s sitting room after dispersing his supporters, who were chanting solidarity songs to protest the siege.

The operative fired gunshots in an attempt to arrest the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant.

The senator’s second son, Amen, was injured in the fracas.

The anti-graft agency’s agents laid siege to Okorocha’s Maitama home at 11.30 am.

They barricaded the entrance gate with their vehicles. Armed policemen were stationed at strategic locations in and outside the premises.

Briefing reporters before he was arrested, Okorocha described the siege as an ugly development.

He said the invasion was to stop him from attending the APC presidential screening, which he said was ongoing.

The former governor also explained that no formal invitation was extended to him before the EFCC raid.

He said: “The situation I find myself in is a situation of what I call hostage.

“Policemen and EFCC operatives are currently in my compound to possibly whisk me away and my gate is blocked.

‘’All I am asking is to be allowed to go for my screening because I am a presidential aspirant and our election comes up on Sunday. If I am not allowed to go for this screening, I might miss it.

‘’I am not an unknown person in the country. I have an address and people know me in the country.

“All it takes for the EFCC is to send me an invitation and I will gladly oblige.’’

Okorocha’s lawyer, Ola Olanipekun (SAN), described the attempt to arrest the Senator without a search warrant as a violation of rights.

He told TheNation: “I got a distress call that the Rochas family is under siege.

“I got here and I met a detachment of EFCC officers and security men led by investigation officers.

“I asked what was going on and was told that the Director of Operations wanted to have a meeting with Senator Okorocha.

“Extant court orders are restraining his arrest. There are no letters of invitation or warrants of arrest. There is none.

“I requested that the invitee should be given time to report either later this week or early next or any other time other than the day of the presidential aspirants under the platform of APC, which the distinguished Senator is a most prominent person who is to be screened for the presidency of Nigeria.

“Today (yesterday) is the day of screening and an invitation by any security agencies that are not preceded by a letter of invitation or notice before now to us is very prejudicial.

“That is why we requested that a day be fixed so that the Senator can voluntarily go and keep an appointment with whoever it is that is inviting him. Again that has been turned down.

“I dare say it (the siege) is a breach of the fundamental human rights of citizen Rochas Okorocha and it has to stop.”

But the EFCC said its operatives laid siege to Okorocha’s residence due to his refusal to honour the commission’s invitations.

It said Okorocha jumped an administrative bail granted him by EFCC.

It also alleged that attempts to arraign Senator Okorocha was twice stalled owing to the absence of the ex-governor who evaded service of processes.

The EFCC made the clarifications in a statement by its Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren.

The statement said: “Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), today May 24, 2022, arrived at the Maitama, Abuja home of a former governor of Imo state, Senator Rochas Okorocha, to effect his arrest.

“The move followed the refusal of the former governor to honour invitations after jumping the administrative bail earlier granted him by the commission.

“EFCC had on January 24, 2022, filed a 17-count criminal charge bordering on diversion of public funds and properties to the tune of N2.9billion against Okorocha.

“The case was assigned to Honourable Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja but attempts to arraign Senator Okorocha was twice stalled owing to the absence of the ex-governor who evaded service of processes.

“At the last adjourned date, March 28th, 2022, Justice Ekwo before adjourning until May 30th, 2022, had warned that it was ‘the last adjournment I shall grant in this matter’.

“In the circumstances, the commission is left with no option than to effect the arrest of Senator Okorocha and bring him to trial.”

‘The more the merrier’ — Tinubu speaks on number of APC presidential hopefuls

Presidential hopeful of the All Progressive Congress (APC),Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, says the growing number of people seeking the party’s presidential ticket is good for democracy.

The former Lagos state governor said this after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday at the presidential villa, Abuja.

Tinubu, who met with the president at his official residence, said the trend is in the best interest of the country.

“The more the merrier. The more they come, the more challenging it becomes for you to think deeply, focus on issues and be ready to serve and Nigeria,” he said.

“It’s all about service, it’s nothing else. Think wisely, get committed to your thinking to serve the nation and bring progress and prosperity to the lives of Nigerians.

“It’s good for the country for so many of us to aspire to want to lead, we’re not abandoning our nation. But there’s only one chair and one possibility. We will do that.”

Tinubu said the ruling party would remain intact and united after its presidential primary, noting that President Buhari has shown that he is in support of a transparent democratic process.

We are sure that we will remain united. You know our symbol is the broom, you don’t break it as you go. Nigeria requires commitment, a uniform system and a stable country and that is the only way we can be very proud of Nigeria,” he said.

“The president has shown a great example of leadership, gave us the freedom to say you want to run, you want to attempt, go ahead. He is a democrat and if we are running a constitutional democracy, you don’t hinder the desire, the wish of other people.”

Tinubu added that the president has “been very honest and forthright” with Nigerians.

Ogun 2023! Opayemi,Modele Sharafa,Akinlade, others allege manipulation of APC Delegate Congress,Call for Direct Primaries

Following the non release of elected delegates nomination forms by the factional Ogun State APC secretariat, four of the governorship aspirants and thirty four other aspirants in different categories have written to the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu protesting the manipulation of the process by a section of the party loyal to Governor Dapo Abiodun.
In the sighted letter signed by Dunni Opayemi , Modele Sarafa-Yusuf, Adekunle Ak.inlade and Biyi Otegbeye, the governorship aspirants and others said potential delegates perceived to be loyal to other aspirants were not issued delegates forms despite presentation of payment tellers for same.
Only handpicked party member who are deemed loyal to the governor were issued delegates forms and despite several protests by members at the state party secretariat, and letters to the factional APC Chairman by different groups, sham delegates "congresses" were said to have been held in Ogun state on Wednesday, where the charade was legitimised.
The aspirants therefore called on the National secretariat of the party to conduct direct primaries and send independent and credible arbiters to conduct the primaries in Ogun state in order to ensure the real voices of the people are heard and credible and acceptable candidates are elected to confront the fledgling opposition party in the State.
This reporter recalls that Ogun State APC is highly polarized with at least three different factions : the Amosun faction, the Gbenga Daniel faction and the Osoba- led faction which the governor has apparently emasculated and which according to disenchanted party members has become a department in the Governor's office.
It will also be recalled that several letters had been written to the APC National Secretariat and INEC about the goings on in Ogun State APC. In one of the letters earlier written to the party and sighted by this reporter, a potential delegate from Ijebu North, Comrade Femi Nuberu had called the shenanigans by Governor Abiodun and his enablers in the party, a great diservice to our fragile democracy.Echoing the frustration of other party members, the potential delegate had written:
"As loyal party members, we have paid into the designated account of our party for the purchase of delegate form and this is with the approval of the Congress of our ward. We got to our state party secretariat yesterday but was shocked to be confronted with unnecessary pranks. They pointedly informed us that the forms are not available for us."

2023! Atiku woos Ogun PDP delegates ahead of party primary

Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, says he will address the issue of devolution of powers if he becomes president in 2023.

Atiku spoke on Saturday when he visited Abeokuta, the Ogun capital, to seek the support of delegates ahead of the presidential primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scheduled for May 28.

He met with  PDP leaders, including Ladi Adebutu, Ogun governorship aspirant, and Sikirullahi Ogundele, the state party chairman.

The former vice-president said he is better qualified to be president due to his experience and maturity, adding that if he is voted into power, he would also focus on unity, security, economy, and education.

“I promise to give every part of this country a sense of belonging as we did in the past,” NAN quoted him as saying.

“When we came to power in 1999, we experienced lack of unity and the first thing we did was to form a government of national unity which engendered the peace we needed for successful governance.

“I am going to tackle insecurity because once you tackle insecurity, there will be peace and when there is peace, you can now begin to implement economic reforms which will create jobs and bring about development.

“I am also going to tackle the issue of decentralisation or rather, devolution of powers to the state and the local governments.”

Speaking further, Atiku also explained why he did not visit Ogun during the 2019 presidential primary of the PDP.

“I was angry with you people because you allowed outsiders from the south-west region to manipulate you and dictate the way you ran your affairs,” he said.

“As long as there is disunity, you will continue to lose election in Ogun.

“Ogun has provided political leadership for the entire nation several times and you are too politically sophisticated and advanced to allow outsiders to interfere in your affairs.

“I am, however, happy because you are now united and I urge you to sustain this unity.”
